Causes of heel pain

2022. 09. 12. 09:39:00 Veress Máté - HillVital

Heel pain is a common problem that is very unpleasant, but rarely caused by a serious illness.

Sometimes the pain will go away on its own, but there are times when it is definitely worth getting the foot checked by a doctor.

Let's look at the possible causes of heel pain.

The human foot is made up of 26 bones, of which the heel bone is the largest. The function of the heel is to provide support for the weight of the body.

According to experts, 1.25 times your body weight is put on your feet when you walk and 2.75 times your body weight when you run.

Heel pain is one of the most common foot complaints. It is therefore the most vulnerable area and its pain has a significant impact on our condition. Much of the pain is mechanical, but it can also be caused by arthritis, trauma, infections, autoimmune and neurological problems, osteoporosis and other bone diseases.

Most heel pain is caused by overuse.

The pain is present when standing up, but later "sneaks in", i.e. it is reduced, but gets worse when standing for long periods or climbing stairs. In teenagers in particular, pain from banging the heel is common. At this age, the heel bone is not fully developed and can rub against other bones more easily. This is also contributed to by wearing slippers with too flat and unfinished soles or high heels from too early an age. Heel pain can also be caused by excess weight and prolonged strain on the foot.

If you experience any of the following, seek medical advice as soon as possible:

Swelling, numbness, fever, inability to walk normally, inability to retract the foot, inability to rise to the toe.

As a home treatment for heel pain, you should definitely try resting.

It is best to avoid running and walking on hard surfaces. Avoid any movement that puts pressure on the heels. Do stretching exercises that involve straining the feet backwards.

Apply ice compresses to the affected area for 15 minutes.

Choose appropriate shoes for sports and everyday walking. Avoid shoes that are too high and too flat heeled.

If you play sport, you can significantly reduce the force and intensity of the stress on your heels by warming up properly. In some cases, heel cushions and heel lifts in shoes can also help.
