Does hair really fall out more in winter?

2022. 12. 19. 08:36:00 Veress Máté - HillVital

Many people experience changes in hair texture and even severe hair loss during the winter. Is this really only due to the weather? That is the question we will try to answer in this article.

What you need to know is that minimal hair loss is perfectly normal and, to a certain extent, healthy. A person can lose up to 100 hairs a day without even talking about baldness. More hair loss than this, however, is an indication of a problem.

Hair is 97% creatine and 3% water. The life cycle of a hair strand consists of 3 stages. Growth, transition and resting. During the transition period, growth stops, followed by a 3-month resting period during which the hair follicle dies. At the end of this cycle, a new hair follicle develops and of course becomes a new hair shaft. Approximately, the thinning of the hair usually starts around the age of 30, although this can vary. In men, balding and greying tend to occur much earlier.

Some research has shown that more hair falls out in October and November, but it is more common in women. This is what science calls seasonal hair loss. This is how the body prepares for winter.

You don't really see significant hair loss in winter, but the cold and heating outside can make hair much drier. Heating can cause the indoor air to change the texture and quality of the hair. So it's true that in the winter months, hair strands can be much drier, duller and more brittle and therefore hair loss can occur to a lesser extent.

Unfortunately, when you wash your hair in winter, you can't dry it in the fresh, warm air outside. The hot air from a hairdryer can damage your tresses and contribute to hair loss. That's why it's a good idea to avoid the blow dryer and it's important to replenish your vitamin stores. It is also important to eat a nutrient-rich diet, especially in winter. Vitamins A, E and B12 are also very important for hair.
