Adrenal fatigue is caused by overwork, resulting in hormonal imbalances and low cortisol levels. The adrenal gland is responsible for the production of sex hormones and cortisol (the stress hormone). These hormones control our thyroid function, our stress response, our libido and our metabolism. When its function is impaired, we face many problems.
Typical symptoms of adrenal fatigue:
1. Brain fog (memory and concentration problems, difficulties with thinking and problem solving)
2. Insomnia
3. Constant fatigue
4. Low libido
5. Sudden weight gain
6. Frequent anxiety
7. Digestive problems
8. Depression or near-depression
9. Craving for sugar or salt
What causes adrenal exhaustion?
First and foremost, it can be due to inadequate stress management, an overworked lifestyle, being in a hurry all the time, things that come at us unexpectedly and cause us great shock. The body then increases its capacity to cope so that we can find a solution as quickly as possible, which is fine as long as it is not prolonged. In summary, it is mental or physical stress that causes glandular exhaustion.
Tests and treatment
If you have any of these complaints, you should have a laboratory test. It is important to emphasise that the laboratory value alone is not sufficient for diagnosis, it should always be interpreted in accordance with the patient's complaints and symptoms. Cortisol levels also vary from time of day to time of day, being highest at dawn to early morning and lowest around midnight. If it is shown that the symptoms are caused by low cortisol levels, treatment is possible by giving the missing hormone.
